Now the head coach at Colorado, Deion Sanders has access to more pitches to get recruits to commit to Boulder. However, it also seems that he lost one going from Jackson State to Mississippi.
Sanders explained that he has to convince high schoolers in warm weather states like Florida to come play football in Boulder, Colorado.
“Guys from the south like us, we didn’t have the financial means to travel, the farthest we went was Georgia,” Sanders said on the All Things Covered Podcast with Patrick Peterson and Bryant McFadden. “We’re not seasoned on the other side of the country, we never fathomed it. It wasn't our thing, we always thought it was too cold.”
As a result, Sanders said he is trying to get these recruits more comfortable in Boulder, which would make it easier for them to commit to Colorado.
“I’m just trying to introduce these young men to the other side of the country that they never thought about,” said Sanders. “When you get out there, they say ‘Oh my gosh, you got mountains with snow on it and it's not even cold?’ Because when it's really snowing, it can’t be so cold. It’s really not that cold.”
So far, the recruiting has been pretty successful, as Sanders was able to land Lakeland (FL) high school cornerback recruit Cormani McClain, the No. 2 recruit by SI99 who was originally committed to Miami.
Sanders has clearly shown a savviness with recruiting from when he started as Jackson State’s head coach, and he now has to alter his approach to getting recruits to Colorado.
