Defender in post Celtic exuberance as he sparks wild scenes with last gasp winner at latest club

Remember Andrew Gutman and his time at Celtic Park? Perhaps not.

The defender had a brief spell at Celtic but was unable to make a top team appearance for the club after joining in 2019. He has since had a number of loan spells in the USA since joining current club Atalanta United but he sent out a reminder of why he ended up at Parkhead with a stunning last-gasp winner for his club side.

Atlanta were heading for a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders before the defender arrowed a beautiful effort low into the net from just over 20-yards to hand his side all three points. It was a 94th minute strike as he sent the home fans wild. The 25-year-old climbed off the bench in the 81st minute to give his manager food for thought for the next game and future line-ups.

His wonderful effort came as his former club made it back-to-back Premiership wins with victory in Dingwall against Ross County.

It is always a tricky task heading to the Staggies and the Hoops were made to work for their win with debut defender Moritz Jenz popping up with a goal just six minutes before the end to make it 2-1, with Liel Abada putting the icing on the cake in added-time.

Kyogo Furuhashi had fired his side in front before Alex Iacovitti levelled for the hosts.

Speaking after the game, boss Ange Posteocoglou told the Celtic FC website : “I thought we played really well today, it’s a difficult place to come to, we know that and particularly it was windy today and they are a big, physical team.

“But I’m really proud of the players. We stuck to our task and I thought we dominated the game in just about every aspect.

'They go up once for a corner and score, but you just have to see our reaction to know that the spirt that we had last year is still well within this group.’

“Even at 2-1 we got ourselves a third, that’s the kind of team we want to be and we want to make sure that we don’t let things during the game affect what we believe in - and it gets tested at a place like this.

“A lot of teams will come here and drop points for sure, so to have that belief within us even on a difficult day is credit to the players.

“They showed it in abundance last year and we want to improve our football absolutely, but we still have to have that resilience and that belief in ourselves that, irrespective of the challenge in front of us, we can overcome it.

“And we had to show that quite a great deal last year, this year we want to improve our football, but we don’t want to lose that, it’s still a very important part of who we are.”
