Defence Secretary takes swipe at Tories who walked out on Boris Johnson

Tory Defence Secretary Ben Wallace this morning hit out at ministers who walked out on Boris Johnson in a swipe at Rishi Sunak.

The minister, who last night announced he was supporting Liz Truss, said he did not think walking out of government was "the right thing to do".

It comes as he announced members of the armed forces would be given up to £3,000 worth of childcare per year per child aged four to 11.

Mr Wallace told Sky News he did not want Boris Johnson to go, and aimed a swipe at ministers who walked out of government as the PM's support collapsed, stating: "I don't think cabinet members walking out at a time of crisis is the right thing to do."

He said he had an "obligation" to continue in his role, and claimed MPs had "other ways" to get rid of Mr Johnson if they wanted him out.

Mr Sunak last night faced uncomfortable questions over his resignation, in which a Tory party member accused him of disloyalty.

Mr Sunak was uncompromising - despite applause for the PM from the audience - stating: "You need to be able to command the confidence of your MPs in Parliament and we got to the point where that wasn't there."

An audience member reminded Mr Sunak: "He's the man that made you a senior politician" and accused him of being on "another planet".

The former Chancellor said he disagreed with Mr Johnson on economic policy, adding: "I was left with no choice but to resign."

Outlining his support for favourite Liz Truss - who has pledged to raise defence spending to 3% of GDP by 2030 - he said: "I am the Secretary of State for Defence, I want to find a candidate that's going to do right by the department and recognise that the threats we face every day are very real and are growing and that they need to be funded properly.

"We can't just sort of pretend they will go away by themselves.

"So you know, I looked at their performances. I looked at them on the hustings, but I also know them both. I've been in Cabinet for two years with both the Chancellor and indeed Liz Truss.

"And so, you know, it was important for me to work out who was the right person to take us forward. So, you know, I know Liz, she's very straight. She's authentic, what you see is what you get, but also she has been very consistent in her support for defence and security."

He also wrote in The Times Ms Truss was "a winner not because she's a slick salesperson but because she is authentic".

Mr Wallace hit out at the former Chancellor, questioning what would have happened if the markets crashed on the day he quit his role, according to The Sun.

"I don't have the luxury as Defence Secretary of just walking out the door - I have roles in keeping this country safe," he told the paper.

"And the guardian of the markets, you know, the guardian of our economy, is the chancellor."
