Decomposed body of woman, 37, wasn't found in her home until six weeks after she died

A woman was found dead and rotting in her East London home for six weeks, her family say.

Sophia Yuferev, 37, who had paranoid schizophrenia, was found by police "significantly decomposed" after what her family say were "appalling" failures by her mental health team.

The 37-year-old was found during a welfare visit on November 16 last year at her flat in Hornchurch.

Officers were alerted by Sophia's care coordinator that she missed her injections, and her mum also reported concerns.

Arriving at her home, police took out Sophia's peephole - only to be hit by a ghastly stench.

Once inside the flat, they then endured a "potent and overwhelming smell" before finding the artist "laying on her back in a white night gown".

East London Coroner's court heard that she had gone without her fortnightly medicine for six weeks, a care coordinator for ten weeks, and Personal Independence Payments since February 2021.

Additionally, she was estranged from her mum and her financial support after their last meeting ended in shouting.

Her North East London Foundation Trust care coordinator only realised she missed her appointments on November 12 after picking up Sophia's case - in a caseload of 25.

Due to the level of decomposition it is not clear if Sophia died within this period, though "there was post gathering outside the address".

A toxicology report found alcohol levels consistent with decomposition and Sophia was known to be teetotal - so booze was ruled out.

Sophia's weight was also scrutinised, as her family claimed she shot up from a "size 10 to a size 20 in less than a year". But her BMI - based on the pathologist findings - was found to be within the normal range.

Coroner Dr Shirley Radcliffe acknowledge some weight would be lost in decomposition but said she was "not malnourished" at the time of death.

Lawyer Andrew Perfect also suggested sudden weight loss could not be ruled out, noting that Sophia had no known income at the time of her death after being cut off benefits.

Sophia's family told MyLondon she "had not enough money, not enough energy to feed herself and look after herself, she was not responsible for herself to care for herself".

Due to delusions brought on by her paranoid schizophrenia, Sophia had previously fled to Siberia to be with her dad, flown to Israel, been repatriated to the UK, and made other escape attempts to Heathrow or nearby forests.

This often left her mum "picking up the pieces", according to her family.

Much to the family's anger, care director Irvine Muronzi said that Sophia's missed injection on October 26 could have been picked up by duty staff.

Mr Muronzi said: "There could have been an earlier intervention of the police and we should have notified the police earlier." He added the Covid related staff shortages were "unprecedented" and duty staff were there to "manage" and "contain" risks.

Speaking after the inquest family members Maria Mashiah and Yulia Tlili described Sophia's treatment as "appalling".

Yulia said: "I think it really did not give us closure. There was no human touch to it. She could have been saved or we could have helped her. Let them bend backwards and see not just a number but a human."

Maria said "she just fell through the gap" - "for two years the psychiatrist did not see her in person, this was appalling".

The North East London Foundation Trust has been contacted for a comment.
