Declan Rice 'first bid' turned down as Liverpool may have avoided Mason Mount problem

The transfer window is officially open for players moving between English clubs as the date of the international market looms.

Liverpool acquired their first signing of the summer in Alexis Mac Allister last week and seven days on, they remain fiercely linked with players across the country and Europe. The same can be said for their Premier League rivals as they all look to get their business done early ahead of the start of pre-season.

Players are currently away on international duty with their respective countries after a gruelling campaign. Many clubs will be looking to enhance their squads in order to challenge at the top end next term.

Some, including Liverpool, are looking to ensure last season was a mere blip as a disappointing campaign almost curtailed any European football at Anfield for the upcoming football calendar. Tottenham Hotspur are among them with Ange Postecoglu picking up the pieces of their collapse after the turn of the year.

Below, we have taken a look at the latest news relating to Liverpool's main competitors ahead of the new campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly launched a joint bid for Leicester City pair James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, worth in excess of £50m.

That is according to the Mail Online who suggest the offer will be rejected by the Foxes - who suffered relegation to the Championship on the final day last month.

It's expected that there will be some departures at the King Power Stadium as they look to deflate their wage budget following their slip into the English second tier, with the two players in question among those in demand. Spurs have reportedly made the first move with the combined offer of £50m but just 12 months ago, they were asking for £60m each for the England duo.

Chelsea

The reports of Chelsea spending continues as they remain linked with additions across England and Europe. It has been reported by Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany that the Londoners have won the race to sign Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.

In January, he was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal as the Gunners looked to add the tenacious midfielder to their engine room but the Seagulls resisted overtures from the north London club.

It is thought that they want at least £80m for the midfielder but are resigned to him leaving the AMEX Stadium this summer. Bayern Munich were also reportedly chasing the midfielder but on Thursday, the German journalist tweeted: "News #Caicedo: He has decided to join @ChelseaFC! Final negotiations now."

Arsenal

Arsenal are the first team to make a move for West Ham United captain Declan Rice with reports suggesting a bid was rejected for the England star.

According to The Telegraph, the Gunners will need to increase their offer to £100m if they are to land the Europa Conference League winner. Rice has been dubbed Mikel Arteta's number one target and he is reportedly facing competition from the team who swooped in to deny them Premier League glory, Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola is said to be a big fan of the 24-year-old with the treble-winning manager looking to shake up his squad.

In the Telegraph report, they say that the initial bid from Arsenal was in the region of £80m plus £10m add-ons but it was dismissed by the Hammers. David Moyes' side are said to be angling towards a fee exceeding £100m including add-ons with the expectation that the money would be paid in three instalments.

Manchester United

Erik ten Hag's Manchester United are looking to ensure that they do not stand still after a positive debut season at Old Trafford. A new goalkeeper, defensive options and attacking additions have been mooted as they look to alleviate any issues from last season.

Champions League finalist Andre Onana is among their targets, according to The Guardian, with Chelsea apparently facing competition from the Red Devils in the battle for the Inter Milan star's signature.

Porto's Diogo Costa is also said to be on the shortlist with the view of challenging David de Gea in mind.

In recent days, a £40m bid has reportedly been rejected for Mason Mount, with the Guardian report suggesting that £70m plus add-ons would be an acceptable price for the England international. It leaves the Old Trafford club in a conundrum as they ponder over how their transfer funds should be spent, with the pursuit potentially becoming a bit of a problem. Liverpool were extensively linked with Mount in recent months but switched attention to secure an early deal for Mac Allister.

Elsewhere, Kim Min-jae has been repeatedly linked with a move to United. However, according to Sky Sports, Bayern Munich are closing in on the central defender despite momentum gathering pace over a switch to the Premier League. It's been claimed his release clause becomes active in July.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United are reportedly in pole position to sign Kieran Tierney from Arsenal as the Gunners are bracing themselves for bids, according to Football Insider.

The website says a formal bid is expected from Eddie Howe's side at the end of month with the first half of next month "looking pivotal" to determining whether Andy Robertson's Scotland teammate.

Borna Sosa is also said to be a target as they look to improve their full-back slot.
