NEW DELHI: To ensure all roads, flyovers, roundabouts, markets and school and hospital buildings are decked up and illuminated for the celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav – 75 years of India’s freedom – lieutenant governor VK Saxena has issued detailed directions to urban local bodies of the city.
The directions came days after Union home minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting of governors, lieutenant governors, chief ministers and administrators of all union territories to take stock of the preparations. The LG also held a meeting with chief secretary and senior officials of all the urban local bodies on Tuesday.
In the run-up to the Independence Day celebrations, the Central government is launching ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ (a Tricolour in every house) campaign on July 22. Not only all prominent places will be decked up with the colours of the national flag, all employees of the urban local bodies will have the Tricolour pinned on their lapels on August 15 fostering the nationalistic and celebratory fervour, Raj Niwas officials said.
According to the officials, New Delhi Municipal Council and Municipal Corporation of Delhi have been asked to identify prominent roads such as Sardar Patel Marg and Shanti Path and important market areas in their respective jurisdiction to be decorated with the Tricolour to give a celebratory look from August 13 to August 15. Delhi Development Authority will carry out a similar exercise in the markets owned and controlled by it.
Urban local bodies will identify important roundabouts in their areas and install floral boards and flags there, said an official.
Raj Niwas officials said that all departments of the Delhi government, MCD, NDMC, DDA and Delhi Police have been asked by the LG to make “concerted efforts” for popularising the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative by ensuring maximum people’s participation.
“A special information and communication campaign will be launched on July 22 for public awareness and ‘prabhat pheris’ by school students will be organised from August 11 to 14,” said the official.
“Directions have also been issued to ensure that the national flag appears on the home page of all websites of various government departments and undertakings with effect from July 22,” the official added.
The Delhi government is also holding separate events from the first week of August, including cultural programmes and a music concert, to celebrate 75 years of Independence.
