Death of popular grandad killed by falling window was ‘unbelievable’, says widow

• Property developer St James Group Ltd and specialist contractor Lindner Prater have been fined £1 million and £300,000 respectively over the death of a man killed by a falling window.
• Coach driver Mick Ferris, 53, died after being crushed by the 130kg window pane, which fell 300ft from the 26th floor of The Corniche development in Vauxhall in October 2018.
• Both companies were found guilty of ignoring foreseeable risks and failing to conduct proper risk assessments, despite a similar window falling from the same building in August 2017.
• Inner London Crown Court ordered each firm to pay £125,000 in costs, while architecture firm Foster + Partners and engineering consultants Wintech Ltd were cleared of safety breaches.
• The victim's widow, Rachel Ferris, told the court the tragic incident was entirely preventable and warned that the falling pane could have hit anybody.
