Death of man in custody at Orange Police Station prompts investigation

An investigation is underway following the death of a man in police custody at Orange in central west New South Wales.

Police said the 40-year-old had been arrested Thursday morning following reports of a domestic violence incident at a house on Amaroo Crescent.

The man became ill and was treated by paramedics at Orange Police Station before being taken to hospital under police guard.

Police said he was discharged on Thursday night and taken back to the police station.

Paramedics were called back to the station on Friday morning but the man died at the scene.

Investigation underway

Police said a critical incident team from Chifley Police District would investigate the incident and would be subjected to an independent review.

The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission said it would investigate the circumstances of the incident, with its investigation to be reviewed by NSW's Professional Standards Command.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
