Deadly Tropical Storm Alberto Causes Devastation In Central America

Tropical storm Ophelia approaches North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia

Central America has been grappling with a devastating situation as more than a dozen people have lost their lives due to heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides triggered by Tropical Storm Alberto. The storm, combined with abundant tropical moisture within the Central American gyre, has wreaked havoc across the region.

In El Salvador, the relentless rains have claimed the lives of at least 11 individuals, including eight adults and three minors. Tragically, three of the victims were fatally struck by fallen trees. The western region of Ahuachapán and the coastal areas have borne the brunt of the flooding, river overflows, and landslides.

Guatemala has also been severely impacted, with eight fatalities and five injuries reported by the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction. Sinkholes and landslides have damaged homes and roads in various areas, prompting the evacuation of nearly 6,000 people. Hundreds of homes are at risk or have already suffered significant damage.

Meanwhile, in Honduras, the Alianza municipality is on high alert due to intense precipitation, strong winds, and electrical storms. The Goascorán River overflowed, leading to flooding that isolated several villages. The Secretariat of Risk and Contingency Management has issued a 72-hour red alert for the area.

The situation in Central America remains critical as communities grapple with the aftermath of Tropical Storm Alberto. Emergency response teams are working tirelessly to provide assistance and support to those affected by the devastating floods and landslides.
