People who suffered damages in the eastern Kentucky floods now have more time to get help from the federal government. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline to register. People now have until October 28th to apply for help with FEMA.
Nate Custer is a spokesman for FEMA. He said there are concerns that people may have been missed.
“There have been communication gaps, cell phone issues, problems in getting the word out to everybody, especially in some of these isolated neighborhoods,” said Custer.
Custer said Governor Andy Beshear requested the extension from the agency.
“So we have the feeling, as does the governor, that there are people who had damage in these 13 counties that have not yet registered with us. So we wanted to give them another month to take advantage of the possibility of getting some recovery help from FEMA,” said Custer.
The extended deadline applies to people within the 13 counties approved for individual assistance. Registration is available online at disasterassistance.gov or at one of the FEMA recovery centers in eastern Kentucky.
