De Minaur not drawn into Open opponents

Facing a qualifier in the Australian Open first round suits Alex de Minaur, whose approach to tournaments is to not get caught up in his opponent or draw scenarios.

The 22nd seed suffered his first loss to British veteran Andy Murray in their Open warm-up at the Kooyong Classic on Thursday, going down 6-3 6-2.

But the 23-year-old Australian was happy with how his game was tracking ahead of his Melbourne Park opener, with his opponent to be decided at the end of qualifying.

"I'm still very happy with the way I'm playing, it's a great prep for me," de Minaur said.

"I think we both bring out the best tennis in each other and we come up with some pretty good rallies and variety, so it's always a good hit-up before the Aussie Open."

Should he advance through round one, de Minaur will play either big-serving American John Isner or Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

De Minaur said he preferred to not look beyond his next opponent.

"I normally don't really like to look at the draw,'' he said.

"I like to just know who my first-round opponent is and that's about it and then we go from there.

"Ultimately my draw always kind of gets spoiled because of media, because they always like to look ahead, but I'm the type of person that likes to take it day by day, so I don't get too far ahead of myself."

Murray has shown some vintage form at Kooyong, the win his second after accounting for China's Zhang Zhizhen on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old has won three majors and reached the Australian Open final three times, and de Minaur said another grand slam title wasn't beyond him.

"If he plays like he did today, I mean of course, he's got that level, but it's just about maintaining it for two weeks as that's ultimately what you've got to do to win a (grand) slam," de Minaur said.

Murray was upbeat, with his ranking climbing back to No.49 after his career was almost ended by a chronic hip issue.

"I had a good level in today's match and part of yesterday's," he said.

"I'm playing the tennis I need to try and be successful.

"I like the conditions here, I'm hitting the ball well and moving well. When I do that my tennis tends to be good,.

"I'll focus the next couple of days on maintaining and hopefully having a good run (at the Open)."

In other results, Taylor Fritz followed up on his Team USA United Cup title by overcoming Australian Alexei Popyrin 7-6 (7-4) 6-1.

Fellow American Brandon Nakashima downed another local hope, Jordan Thompson, 6-4 6-2.
