DC Metro Police Chief Prepared For Election Day Security

Chief Smith also mentioned the department's collaboration with various partners to monitor events on election night and the days following. She emphasized the importance of close coordination to ensure a safe and peaceful electoral process.

In anticipation of key dates such as January 6 and the upcoming Inauguration Day, Chief Smith stated that there are currently no identifiable threats in the District of Columbia. However, she emphasized the readiness of the department to respond swiftly to any security concerns that may arise.

Regarding Vice President Harris' upcoming speech at the Ellipse, Chief Smith noted an expected increase in participants, with attendance projected to be around 52,000, higher than the initial estimate of 20,000. The National Park Service has adjusted its permit to accommodate the larger crowd.

Chief Smith also mentioned a contingency plan for a 'break glass moment,' indicating the readiness to seek assistance from law enforcement agencies outside of Washington, DC if necessary to maintain peace and order.

Chief Smith reiterated a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and riots, emphasizing the department's commitment to ensuring public safety during these critical events.

Both January 6 and Inauguration Day have been designated as National Special Security Events by the Department of Homeland Security, with the federal government providing significant security measures to safeguard these important occasions.
