David Tennant is starring in the brand new BBC drama Inside Man and praises the 'terrifying but plausible' plot.
The four-part drama brings the Doctor Who actor and Stanley Tucci together as a vicar and a death-row prisoner, alongside It's a Sin's Lydia West who plays an investigative journalist . The first two episodes of Inside Man aired on BBC One this week, and will continue on Monday October 3 with the third instalment.
Speaking at a press event for the show, David, 51, who plays vicar Harry Watling in Steven Moffat's new show, said: "[I was thinking], 'Oh, no, don't make that terrible decision. And then don't follow it with that terrible decision," but added that "at each step the plausibility is there".
He continued: "And that's what I think is terrifying as a viewer – I can kind of see how I could end up down this terrible dead end alley, and then the further down it you get there’s the sort of mounting asphyxiation that you feel. It was terribly appealing to be part of that story."
Tennant previously teased that his character makes "catastrophically bad decisions" in the programme, adding that at its heart it is "a story about a man who, in pursuit of doing the right thing".
There was a moment when the Scottish actor almost didn't get the role of vicar Harry, due to his busy schedule. Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Moffat said: "Once I'd written the first couple, or maybe just the first one, and shown it to Sue [Vertue, producer], we both agreed that it'd be a perfect part for David Tennant, and we know David really well because we hang out with David and Georgia [Tennant] quite often, and obviously I'd worked with him before.
"We just thought he'd be perfect, but he wasn't at all available. His entire schedule was booked up, largely with theatre."
It was only after they had "gone around the houses looking for a Harry" that the COVID-19 pandemic began, shuttering theatres. "COVID closed the world down for two years and David was suddenly much more available," Moffat explained.
Meanwhile Stanley Tucci, whose character Jefferson Grieff appears in a separate storyline at the start of the show, recently said that what attracted him to Inside Man was the cast and crew that had been assembled, saying that he "loves" Moffat's writing.
He continued: "I loved the Sherlocks and I think he is an amazing writer. I think David Tennant is just a great, great actor and Lydia [West] and Dolly [Wells] too – it’s an amazing group of people."
Inside Man episode 3 will air on Monday, October 3 on BBC One.
