David Tennant backed as bookies first choice to play Doctor Who again

Speculation is rife for who will be taking on the role of Doctor Who as Jodie Whittaker is due to step out of the Tardis for good later this year.

David Tennant, who played the Time Lord from 2005-2010 in the BBC series, has become a bookies' favourite to reprise his role and become the 14th Doctor.

The Scottish actor famously played the Tenth Doctor and was hugely popular with viewers, before passing the baton to The Crown's Matt Smith.

Jodie Whittaker is set to leave the Tardis later this year, after becoming the first woman ever to play the Time Lord in the sci-fi series, sending people spiralling over who will play the time traveller next.

According to the British betting and gambling company Ladbrokes, he is leading the race with an impressive 11/10 odds as the next Doctor.

Alex Apati, of Ladbrokes, told the Express: "Rumours surrounding a sensational TARDIS return for David Tennant are gathering speed, and the latest odds suggest that's exactly what Doctor Who chiefs have up their sleeve when it comes to Jodie Whittaker's replacement."

Earlier this year, a BBC source claimed that David Tennant would be coming back to the show and become the first actor to play separate incarnations of the leading Time Lord.

Doctor Who star Raquel Cassidy discussed the idea of Tennant returning to his most famous role, admitting that anything can happen.

Raquel, 54, starred alongside Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC series and spoke exclusively to The Express about David's potential return.

The actress remarked: “I mean, if David wants to go back then that is fantastic.

“Why not? You know, it should be that anything can happen if he wants to.

“He was a very, very beloved doctor, so I think that would be really lovely.

“I'm not sure if we’ve ever had a Doctor go back and re-inhabit the same body. So, that would be interesting,” she added.

According to Ladbrokes, three stars of Channel 4's It's A Sin members are also in the mix.

Lydia West and Olly Alexander sit at 4/1 to helm the show with fellow on-screen cast member and lead in the West End musical Cabaret Omari Douglas at 6/1.

If the rumours are true, it would make David Tennant the only Doctor Who actor to have played the same incarnation of the time lord twice.

The Good Omens star has recently been filming the Amazon Prime show in Edinburgh alongside Michael Sheen and Jon Hamm reprising their role in the series.
