David Moyes insists West Ham can take positives from Liverpool defeat ahead of Sevilla tie

David Moyes says West Ham can take great encouragement from their performance against Liverpool as they head into their Europa League tie against Sevilla.

The Hammers face the six-time Europa League winners in their last-16 tie - starting with a trip to Spain on Thursday.

West Ham suffered a narrow defeat at Anfield but put in a much improved performance on recent weeks and created enough chances to head back to London with another victory over the Reds this season.

Pablo Fornals, Manuel Lanzini and Michail Antonio all passed up good opportunities to score, days after Moyes criticised his forwards for a lack of creativity and clear decision making at Southampton.

If they can add the finishing touch on Thursday, West Ham could cause quite the upset in Europe.

“Can we take encouragement for Sevilla? Definitely,” said Moyes.

“It is easy for me to say that but ultimately we did not get any points from it but I think we were worthy of something today. Somebody said to me coming in that we had more shots on goal in the first half today than anybody since Jurgen has taken over and I did not think we were great in the first half.

“There were bits of good stuff from us and we are trying to keep it going. We beat Liverpool narrowly 3-2 at the London Stadium we have narrowly lost 1-0 today so there are signs we are getting a little bit closer to where we would like to be in challenging the best teams and Liverpool are certainly one of them.”

With Liverpool having faced Sevilla in European competition under Klopp, Moyes took a moment to pick the German’s brain and try and gain an upper hand.

“I was asking Jurgen about Seville and he was telling me different things,” said Moyes.

“I was trying to get some tips as he knows what it is like but overall we have a great week [coming up] and we did a lot of good stuff yesterday that might have got us a point.”
