David Moyes gives honest verdict on West Ham performance after defeating Manchester United

David Moyes felt West Ham should have been given a penalty in their win against Manchester United on Sunday night.

David de Gea gifted the hosts a lead in the 26th minute of the match with a calamitous blunder, but Moyes' side were almost given an opportunity to extend their advantage before half-time when Victor Lindelof appeared to handle the ball.

Although West Ham's players and supporters passionately appealed for a penalty, it was not given, although that controversial decision did not influence the outcome of the match, as United were unable to respond regardless.

The victory was Moyes' first win against United in the Premier League since being sacked by the club in 2014 and he was visibly delighted with the result, which should be enough to guarantee the club's top-flight status next season.

Moyes spoke to BT Sport after the game and while praising his players said West Ham should have been given a penalty.

"They showed huge character, I thought they [his players] had to do a really good job and they played well tonight," Moyes told BT Sport. "We also had to defend well at times as well, so overall, I thought their performance was excellent tonight.

"We've been up and down this season and it's not been easy to explain exactly why. Is it the new players coming in, or maybe some of the players from the last few years not doing quite as well, but I have to say Lucas Paqueta is incredibly talented.

"Declan Rice especially has grown and I can say very good things about him. I've actually not seen it again, but the staff who were looking thought it was a definite penalty again and we've had a few decisions that have gone against us [this season].

"Now that you're showing me and I'm seeing it back, it could have easily been given as well."
