David Moyes delivers update on Craig Dawson’s West Ham future and gives Ross Barkley verdict

West Ham United boss David Moyes admits he is unsure about the future of Craig Dawson following recent links with a move away.

The centre-back, who has missed the duration of the season so far with a quad injury, has been linked with transfer interest from Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers, is reportedly keen on a return to the midlands this summer, having spent nine years of his career with West Bromwich Albion.

Speaking on the future of Dawson, Moyes said he was unsure whether or not Dawson will still be at club when the deadline slams shut on Thursday night.

“Well he’s had an injury for the best part of four or five weeks,” said Moyes. “He is back training now. Ideally, we wouldn’t but it’s probably a much more complicated situation than what it is so it is an ongoing thing at the moment and we’ll just have to see how it goes.”

Moyes also spoke about the future of midfielder Ross Barkley. The former Chelsea man and England international became a free agent on Monday after his contract at Stamford Bridge was cancelled.

Asked whether he would sign Barkley, having worked with the midfielder during his rising years at Everton, Moyes said that he would not rule out the possibility of signing the 28-year-old on a free transfer.

“I would never rule anybody out but I’ve got to say on Ross, I gave him his debut at 16 and he’s had a really good career,” added Moyes. “He’s played for England and played for big clubs. If it is not us, I wish him well wherever he does go.

“I think sometimes when you are in this situation, you have got maybe a little bit more to prove because you have to come back and show people exactly what you are.”
