NEW YORK — David Letterman is thanking Rhode Island hospital for making the best out of a “scary” situation.
The former "Late Show" host, 74, revealed that he hit his head on the sidewalk last August after he tripped while walking in Providence with son Harry, then 17.
“I go unconscious — never been knocked out before in my life,” said the "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction" host in a video published Thursday.
Letterman said that passersby called the paramedics and he was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.
“They stitch me up, they X-rayed my head. They gave me a CT scan, they scrubbed me up. They had a guy come in and clean my teeth — I got a brand new suit, two pairs of pants, it was delightful. What an experience,” said Letterman.
“And it’s the kind of thing where, it was scary at the time, but because of the people in the emergency room helping me, it became sort of a fun little project. Certainly not life and death. And I know that’s what we deal with in emergency rooms. So I can’t thank you enough for making time for me. ... Thank you again to one and all.”
Letterman celebrated the 40th anniversary of “Late Night” this year.
