David Foster, 72, has 'no regrets' about welcoming baby with third wife, 38, in his 70s

David Foster says he has 'no regrets' after welcoming a baby while aged in his 70s.

The multi-award-winning music mogul, 72, welcomed his one-year-old son Rennie last year with his fifth wife Katharine McPhee, 38.

American Idol singer Katharine tied the knot with music producer David in 2019 and just two years later gave birth to their baby boy.

Top Billboard 100 musician David said that becoming a father again at his was 'not something he thought could happen', but he 'hasn't regretted a single day of it'.

David also has daughters Allison, 52, Amy, 49, Sara, 41, Erin, 40, and Jordan, 36, from past relationships.

Speaking of becoming a dad again, he said: "I've loved every single day.

"It's the standard thing of like 'Oh, well you were so young when you had your children and you were working day and night, you never saw them'."

He told People: "And there is some truth to that, sadly, for my [older] kids. I was just working a lot. Even though I'm working a lot now, I'll cancel anything just to hang with him. It's just different."

The couple met in 2006 when he was a music mentor on American Idol.

He coached Katharine alongside a group of contestants in a season that aired from January to May 2006 – she had just turned 22 and David was 56.

They remained friends for several years, according to Katharine, while both of them went through a marriage and a divorce.

Defending their age gap, David referred to Celine Dion's marriage to her late husband and manager Rene Angelil, who was over a quarter-century her senior.

The pair met when she was a 12-year-old aspiring singer and he was 38 – shortly after the pair met Rene quickly became Celine's manager.

They officially began dating in 1987 when she was just 19 and he was 45 – all before they eventually got engaged in 1991.

"With Celine and Rene Angelil, there was a big age difference," David told the outlet. "I was working with them for a long time it just became Celine and Rene. It just looked and felt normal."

He admitted the coupling looked "kind of odd in the beginning" but he hopes people look and his and Katharine "like we belong together" because "we feel like we do".

Katharine replied: "Even if they don't, we don't care.

"We just love our history, how we met and where we are now. Sometimes we look at each other like, 'This is so wild that we're together'."
