David Fifita's schoolboy link a contract key for Titans

Off-contract Gold Coast forward David Fifita's schoolboy connection with his close friend and halfback Tanah Boyd could be one key factor that keeps him at the club.

The 22-year-old wrecking ball has a big decision to make about his future. The Titans are confident they can keep him but are aware Canberra are right in the mix, amongst other clubs.

Fifita, who will play against the Dolphins on Sunday night, said he was "fully committed" to Gold Coast.

He did not give much away about his future, batting questions away like an old pro, but mentioned his former Keebra Park High School teammate Boyd when asked whether that liaison could be a factor in his decision.

"We have got a good connection," Fifita said.

"He's one of my best mates. Having him there is really good. We are Keebra Park boys and came through a good system there.

"We are only going to get better too. I feel comfortable with him out there on the right edge.

"All that type of (contract) stuff I just leave for my manager to sort out. I have just got to do my best and my footy will do the talking for wherever I go or stay."

Titans coach Justin Holbrook is aware of the Boyd factor. The 22-year-old is set to play halfback on the right edge this year where he will link up with Fifita.

Holbrook has been impressed with Fifita this season and told AAP that "those personal combinations are always good" and the club has put measures in place to try and retain him.

"Hopefully he does stay because we really want to keep him," Holbrook said.

"We've put it on Dave to work hard and since he's come back from the World Cup he has done that.

"It is up to us as coaches, the halves and Dave himself to all work together to get the best out of him.

"What we have done in recruiting experienced hooker Sam Verrills and an experienced half in Kieran Foran is going to help his game as well. We feel we have done everything right here for him to play at his best."

Fifita is in great shape and says he is determined to take his game and the team to the next level this year as the Titans target a return to finals footy.

"Everything in my game I have got to be better in. My attack, my defence and my combinations with whoever I am running out there with in round one," he said.

"We have got a young crew and I am pretty much one of the leaders in the club.

"We've put in the work. We've got new players in key positions and they have been really good for myself and the younger lads coming through."
