When it’s your job to speak on live television for three-plus hours, how you sound is a pretty important aspect of the job. But for YES Network’s Michael Kay and David Cone, they were experiencing the strangest of audio difficulties early on in the Yankees’ game against the Rays on Wednesday.
You have to give Cone credit, though. He answered the moment with a perfectly executed joke.
As the Yankees analyst was delivering the scouting report for Nestor Cortes, it became apparent through his headset that the audio issues had it sounding like he was slurring his words. Every word was slow and dragged out. He sounded drunk — very drunk. He assured viewers that he wasn’t actually intoxicated by shouting out his former Yankees teammate David Wells.

“This is how I sound after a night out with David Wells,” Cone said.
So good.
Wells, of course, famously threw a perfect game in 1998 while battling an epic hangover. I guess that reputation continues 24 years later.
MLB fans did appreciate Cone’s witty remark.
