David Beckham has praised the England Lionesses for inspiring his daughter Harper to play football again following their Women’s Euro 2022 success in the summer.
The former England captain paid tribute to the stars in a video to be played at the Pride of Britain Awards, where they’re set to receive the special Inspiration Award.
In the clip, which will be shown on Monday night, the former Manchester United player thanked the Lionesses for “bringing it home” and for inspiring a new generation of female footballers.
“Thank you very much, girls, for inspiring my daughter and making her kick a ball around again with her dad,” Beckham said of the Lionesses, who beat Germany 2-1 after extra time in July to win their first European Championship.
“For me personally, having a daughter, I want her to look up to inspiring people... They inspired a whole generation, a new generation.
“The amount of girls I was seeing in parks playing football, my daughter wanted to go out and play. That’s how inspiring it was for our nation.”
The 47-year-old has been to many England games with his children, particularly women’s matches with his only daughter.
The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards will be held at London’s Grosvenor House, with Carol Vorderman, 61, as host.
Lionesses Alessia Russo, Ella Toone, Ellie Roebuck, Fran Kirby, Hannah Hampton, Jill Scott, Leah Williamson, Millie Bright and Rachel Daly are all set to walk the red carpet for the star-studded event, which honours the nation’s unsung heroes.
The awards will be broadcast on ITV at 8pm on Thursday, October 27.
Earlier this month, it was announced that Beckham’s son Romeo was training with Brentford’s B team.
However, it is not known how long he will be with the Premier League club.
The 20-year-old, who was once on Arsenal’s books, is contracted to Inter Miami, the US franchise co-owned by his father. He featured for their reserve side in the MLS Next Pro division last season.
