David Beckham makes decision on Phil Neville's future as Inter Miami head coach

Inter Miami have announced the MLS club have extended Phil Neville's contract as head coach. The former Manchester United defender's contract was set to expire at the end of this season but has now signed a deal that will see him remain in charge during the 2023 season.

In an official statement released on the Inter Miami website, Neville stated: “It’s a great honor to stay at Inter Miami. I’ve always thought long-term, I’ve always thought that I want to be at this Club for a long time.

"I think we’re in the early growth period of this Club, the early building process and I feel as if we’ve made great strides over the last two years, but by no means is the journey finished. In 2022 we finished sixth in the league, we got into playoffs. But that’s not success, that’s progression. The expectation is to win.”

Neville was appointed manager of Miami in 2021 by his former United teammate David Beckham. Since his appointment, he has been in charge of 72 games, winning 28, drawing 11 and losing 33.

Despite only having a 38.9% win-rate, Miami are still considered a fledgling team finding its way in the MLS - so to muster a playoff appearance this summer was enough to keep Neville in a job.

Miami finished 6th in the table, securing a playoff place, however, they were well beaten in the first round by reigning champions New York City FC.

With Neville's future now secure he will turn his thoughts to deciding who will fill the designated player spot vacated by Gonzalo Higuain after his retirement. Some reports have l inked Lionel Messi with a possible move to the US while others have stated that Miami could be interested in United forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
