David beats Goliath: the biggest upsets of the World Cup so far

Ghana and Cape Verde were ranked 73rd and 67th in the world respectively heading into the World Cup. However, defying the odds, both teams have managed to push through the group stage and into the last 32, winning and drawing against opponents with far higher Fifa rankings.

This chart shows the biggest upsets of the tournament so far, and the difference in ranking for every team. This only shows results with a rankings difference greater than 30, so some matches, like Australia’s win against Turkey, don’t make the cut.

The Cape Verde head coach, Bubista, said his team had “shown that nothing is impossible” after his side secured a historic meeting with Argentina in the last 32.
