David and Samantha Cameron wear matching tartan and mingle with punters at races

David and Samantha Cameron wore matching tartan and mingled with punters at a small race meeting yesterday.

The former Prime Minister enjoyed a day out at Cocklebarrow races in Gloucestershire.

The Heythrop point-to-point fixture, a form of amateur horse racing over fences, had eight contests for the crowd to enjoy.

David Cameron, PM from 2010 to 2016, wore a blue and green plaid Sherpa jacket, jeans, walking boots and a cap for the outing, on a cold day.

His wife Samantha sported a longer tartan coat, knitted dress, dark blue scarf and gloves and wellies.

The event was at Aldsworth and a horse named Fifty Shades won the Lord Ashton of Hydes Cup at odds of 5-1.

Trainers Ben Pauling and Fergal O'Brien, well-known trainers in the professional ranks, were also celebrating success with their thoroughbreds.

Ravens Tower took the Hunt Members race for jockey Megan Fox, while Stacks Mountain came home in front in the PPORA Club Members Conditions contest for novice riders.

The Camerons have kept a lower profile since leaving number 10, after the PM resigned when the UK voted to leave the European Union.

This week, analysis from Carbon Brief suggested UK energy bills are £2.5billion higher than they would have been had Cameron's government not scrapped a number of climate policies.

A loss of around £60 per British household is forecast for next winter, the New Statesman reports.

Last year David Cameron hit the headlines as part of the Greensill lobbying row.

Over the Christmas period, Samantha Cameron was busy promoting her fashion label Cefinn.

She said £290 cashmere jumpers, £90 scarves and £65 hats were 'brilliant' Christmas presents in a video on the brand's account.

Samantha tried on two of the garments, giving advice on how women would style them.

The new designs come after she revealed she had 'sleepless nights' about the firm surviving when Covid-19 hit businesses hard.
