Sometimes I wonder whether food vendors who offer extraordinary dishes are merely entrepreneurial sadists looking for legal ways to hurt people. This might be true of Dave, whoever he might be, of Dave’s Hot Chicken, London’s latest fried chicken joint that asks customers to sign a legal waiver before dining on the spiciest dish on the menu.
I can’t imagine any other fried chicken shop in town — I’ve lost count of them all at this point — goes as hard and as fast as Dave’s. It is Nashville-style. The brand’s debut UK restaurant on Shaftesbury Avenue in Soho reminds me a little of Hattie B’s, a Nashville favourite which I visited last year. There, I tried the hottest level of spice available, titled Shut The Cluck Up!, and found it fairly distressing.
