Dave Canales just wants Bryce Young to do his ‘one-eleventh’

Without getting too much into detail, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales keeps giving his vision for a new and improved Bryce Young.

Canales recently joined SiriusXM NFL Radio and talked about his opportunity to work with last year’s No. 1 overall pick. As he’s done before, the quarterback whisperer stated that he’s looking to make Young’s job much easier in his sophomore campaign.

“So for me, as I got ready for the interview process, the more film I watched, the more I just saw—well, here’s a really accurate guy, I know what he’s made of, there’s the mobility,” Canales said. “Let’s just create a system around him that’s an intelligent system that’s balanced that just asks him to do his one-eleventh. And maybe have three to five special plays a game, but you don’t need to be special the whole time. Just facilitate the offense.

“That’s kinda the stuff that I know that he can do. The things that stick out for me right away is just the accuracy, the mobility, courage in the pocket—maybe a little too courageous at times—I’m sure he’s learning the urgency it takes to play quarterback in this league. But a guy that’s wired the right way that came back every week and just battled.”

Young battled, but to almost to avail.

The theme of Carolina’s two-win season was a lack of continuity on offense, with the No. 1 pick being the No. 1 victim. Between head coach Frank Reich and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown playing hot potato with the playbook, his receivers failing to get open and the constant injuries on the interior of his offensive line, Young barely had a chance in 2023.

But Canales, who helped revive Geno Smith in 2022 and Baker Mayfield this past season, may be the coach to give Young a real opportunity from here on out.
