A woman faces multiple charges after allegedly striking her mother over the head with a bottle and strangling her until she lost consciousness.
The 29-year-old, who has not been named to protect the identity of the alleged victim, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday, July 15.
She is yet to enter pleas to one count each of aggravated common assault, choking a person and rendering them insensible, and choking, suffocating, or strangling another person.
Police allege the two women were at a home in south Canberra about 5.40pm, when the daughter allegedly struck her mother over the head with a bottle before strangling her until she lost consciousness.
When the mother later regained consciousness, the daughter allegedly attempted to strangle her again. The mother managed to escape the home and contact police.
Paramedics took the woman to hospital for treatment, and police arrested the 29-year-old a short time later.
On Wednesday, Legal Aid duty lawyer Niamh Dwyer applied for bail on the woman's behalf, which was opposed by the prosecution due to safety concerns for the alleged victim.
Ms Dwyer said the 29-year-old could stay with a friend in Sydney and comply with a range of orders, including not contacting her mother or going within 100 metres of her.
Magistrate Ian Temby granted bail under strict conditions, saying he was satisfied that Sydney provided sufficient distance between the woman and her mother.
Her case will return to court in August.
