Darren Ambrose pinpoints Newcastle's turning point and makes 'signing of season' claim

Darren Ambrose believes Newcastle's win over Leeds United was the real turning point of their season.

The Magpies took all three points from Elland Road courtesy of a Jonjo Shelvey free-kick, a result which kick started a three-game winning streak.

The results lifted the Magpies out of the bottom three for the first time this season, and Ambrose believes his former side will stay up.

"I'm absolutely delighted for them," Ambrose told Sky Sports. "Before the takeover happened they were on one point.

"I was backing them to stay up. It doesn't matter when they get the points. I didn't see a team, even before the transfer window, that was bad enough to go down.

"Although, they only had one point. After they lost to Cambridge in the cup, which was terrible, they picked up a good draw against Watford."

There was plenty of speculation surrounding Newcastle's January transfer window after the completion of the Saudi led takeover made them the richest club in world football.

The first to sign on the dotted line was England international Kieran Trippier and Ambrose believes he's already the signing of the season.

He said: "The signed some fantastic players in the window. Kieran Trippier for me is the signing of the season so far.

"It's bad that he's picked up an injury but they've shown already they can play without him.

"The best thing to happen to them in the January transfer window was the winner against Leeds. That winner against Leeds, because no matter what players you bring into a team, if a team is real low on confidence, it brings you down a little bit.

"They've brought those players into a team that's just beaten Leeds. Matt Targett, Dan Burn, [Bruno] Guimaraes not getting in the team at the moment. He looks class. I've watched him for Brazil already and he could be a fantastic acquisition for Newcastle.

"Chris Wood, obviously makes a difference up front already, he hasn't scored yet but is making a difference.

"Kieran Trippier we've spoken about, but the winner against Leeds was the start of this revival and I honestly think they'll be comfortable staying up this season. I really do.

"The next few games, Brentford, Brighton, Southampton and then they play Chelsea, which will be a tough one, I think there's at least six points out of those games."

Joe Willock scored his first goal of the season after signing permanently from Arsenal in the summer.

The 22-year-old signed a six-year contract at St. James' Park after a stellar loan spell last season. The midfielder has struggled to recapture that form in the first half of the season, but Eddie Howe believes the midfielder is going from strength to strength, something Ambrose agrees with.

"They will be comfortably safe," said Ambrose. "It was a fantastic finish from Joe Willock. He's been playing low on confidence, as I said before, prior to this mini revival.

"If he can get back to the form he showed when he was on loan, he's going to be a fantastic, like a new signing, until the end of the season if that's the start of this form that he could potentially get into. It's only good for Newcastle."
