Danny Trejo tricked into starring in controversial Ben Shapiro film says son

  • Gilbert Trejo, the son of 82-year-old Mexican actor Danny Trejo, has told The Independent that his father was tricked into joining the controversial pro-ICE film Pawn Shop and is contractually prohibited from speaking out against it.
  • According to Gilbert, the actor accepted the role believing it was a standard action movie, but conservative commentator Ben Shapiro’s company, The Daily Wire, joined two weeks into filming and altered the script to fit their political agenda.
  • Despite public backlash, Danny Trejo released a statement clarifying that he is pro-immigrant rather than pro-ICE, while his son stressed that the actor has actively campaigned for Democratic candidates and does not share the film's message.
  • Gilbert explained that his father cannot walk away from the project without being sued for breach of contract, shut down production for the rest of the cast and crew, and face severe personal financial distress.
  • The film, which follows an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer barricaded inside a pawn shop following a fatal shooting of a protester, has already faced local disturbances and protests ahead of its planned 2027 release.
