Danny Murphy slams 'shambolic' Manchester United after Southampton draw

Danny Murphy has slammed Manchester United as 'shambolic' following their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.

The afternoon had started positively the Red Devils with Jadon Sancho tapping in at the back post to give his side the lead.

Moments after half-time, similarly to midweek, United were pegged back thanks to a composed finish by Che Adams with the Saints having further chances to win it in the latter stages.

Analysing the performance on Match of the Day, referring to comments made by opposition boss Ralph Hasenhuttl about United's defensive woes, the former Liverpool man said: "He (Hasenhuttl) has a very sharp point.

"He is bang on. Their work rate off the ball is shambolic, their tactical plan is poor.

"The lack of tracking back is just basics and they just don't do it."

Fellow pundit Jermaine Jenas added: "United were in a reasonable position but Southampton did not have to work hard to get into a good position.

"Two passes it takes to get into a situation where you are up against six Manchester United players with seven Southampton players going into United's half.

"Something is not right there.

"It was a brilliant finish (by Adams) don't get me wrong but even at the back post (Stuart) Armstrong could have had a tap-in.

"They were pulled apart and it looked like they did not have a clue at times."

"You know what the worry is for Manchester United?" Murphy continued.

"They just keep getting worse, they are not getting better."

The duo went on to analyse United with the ball: "It did not got any better," Jenas sighed.

"They were poor with the ball I felt that they lacked a lot of ideas at times.

"When they put nice moves together the thing that was evident was the lack of overloads and bodies.

"Where was the creativity? Where was the bodies that wanted the ball?

"I highlight (Scott) McTominay, (Paul) Pogba and (Bruno) Fernandes as they are the midfield, their the engine and the thing that strikes me is body language - they just stand still.

"Nothing is happening in that team at the minute it is either a lack of ideas or they do not believe what they are being asked to do."

Gary Lineker questioned whether the problems were due to lack of coaching or attitude with Murphy answering: "I think it is a bit of both.

"I think the attitude is not right and then it is a knock on (effect), anything you try and coach is not going to work if the attitude is not right."

Manchester United return to action on Tuesday night when they host Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League.
