Danny Cowley on next step as Aberdeen-linked ex Portsmouth boss delivers managerial return timeline

Danny Cowley has given an update on his return to management after being sacked by Portsmouth last month - with the Aberdeen-linked boss stating he is 'used to working'.

The Dons sacked Jim Goodwin at the end of January following a string of embarrassing losses which saw them succumb to 5-0 and 6-0 defeats to Hearts and Hibs respectively, with a stunning 1-0 loss to sixth-tier side Darvel sandwiched in between. That led the club on the hunt for a new boss, though interim manager Barry Robson remains in charge with no progress being made as of yet.

Chris Wilder had been linked but a potential coup for the ex-Sheffield United hero seems dead in the water, whilst others such as Czeslaw Michniewicz and Neil Lennon continue to be linked. And, with Cowley an outside runner for the vacant post, he has detailed his desire to get back into management - urging Dons fans to 'wait and see' with the former Pompey boss and his sibling assistant Danny 'used to working'.

Cowley said on the EFL highlights show: “I just think we’ll have to wait and see. For us [Nicky and I], we’re used to working, we like to work so getting up every morning and attacking the day and just using the time wisely to take the learning, getting out to watch some games, getting out to some clubs.

“[We've] Been lucky enough to get out to some clubs and we’ve been invited into some clubs and seen some other people work, which I think will be really good for Nicky and I. Ultimately, we just want to improve and get better and that’s what we’ll be trying to do in this period while we wait to get back in.”

Cowley had worked his way up from the lower leagues of English football, starting out at Concord Rangers in the Essex Senior Football League. Taking them up three divisions, he has headhunted by Braintree Town, before moving on to Lincoln City after one season.

Winning the National League title and beating Premier League Burnley in his first season at Sincil Bank, Cowley then took the Imps to League One for the first time this century. Huddersfield appointed him with his stock high, and they stayed up under his guidance - though he was swiftly and stunningly sacked. Joining Portsmouth six months later, he almost led the club to the League One play-offs, spending just under two years on the south coast before being axed.
