Daniel Farke knows first hand that Angus Gunn could be the 'perfect fit' for Leeds United

As Leeds United search for a new goalkeeper, one name mentioned is Daniel Farke's former Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Leeds will need a new shot-stopper this summer after Joel Robles left at the end of his contract, while Illan Meslier is expected to leave. With Farke now in place, the club are pushing ahead with their transfer plans to build their squad for the new season.

Leeds signing Gunn could make a lot of sense and would signal the third time that Farke had signed the goalkeeper, having previously signed him twice for Norwich City. There could be no clearer indication that Farke likes the 27-year-old.

Speaking after first signing him on loan from Manchester City in 2017, Farke said: "Angus is very highly-rated and a really talented goalkeeper. He’s brilliant with his feet as well as his hands and is tall too. We’re happy to have him here for the next season and are thankful to Manchester City for helping us with this deal. I’m looking forward to working with such a great talent."

Gunn would enjoy a successful season on loan at Carrow Road that year as he played every game in their promotion-winning season. But rather than rejoin Norwich at that point, it was Southampton who won the race, paying what was reported at the time to be a £13.5m fee.

Though Farke's time at Norwich would not last much longer, the biggest compliment he could have given the Scotland international was in the summer of 2021 when the Canaries resigned Gunn from the Saints after their promotion back to the Premier League.

Farke said at that time: “We got the feeling that Angus will be the perfect fit to our goalkeeping group. We’ve got two very experienced goalkeepers in Tim Krul and Michael McGovern and a young goalkeeper in Daniel Barden. Angus fits perfectly into this goalkeeping team.

“He’s in a perfect age and is full of potential. He’s proven that he can play on the top level and was fantastic for us three seasons ago. He played almost each and every second for us. He has had a call-up to the England national team and there was a big-money move to Southampton. That says a lot about his potential.

“After he was our number one goalkeeper three years ago we got the feeling that we helped give him the perfect platform. We needed a strong addition to our goalkeeping squad and for the short, medium and long term we believe that Angus is the perfect fit.”
