'Danger to life' weather warning as Storm Dudley hits Greater Manchester today

Storm Dudley is set to hit Greater Manchester later today - bring fierce winds and a 'danger to life' Met Office warning.

Forecasters predict a 'spell of very strong winds' and a risk of disruption later on Wednesday and into the small hours of Thursday.

Greater Manchester is covered by an official 'yellow' Met Office alert.

And on Friday, the Met Office has updated its wind alert for Greater Manchester to 'amber' as Storm Eunice sweeps in behind Dudley.

The Eunice alert reads: "Storm Eunice may cause significant disruption due to extremely strong winds on Friday.

"There is a good chance that flying debris could result in a danger to life"

On Wednesday, road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, forecasters said, with longer journey times and cancellations possible.

Some roads and bridges could close.

The Met Office has warned of falling trees and damage to buildings, saying tiles could be blown from roofs.

Power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

"There is a chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris, as well as large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties," said the Met Office.

Elsewhere in the UK, strong winds of up to 90mph are feared and the Met Office has issued an 'amber' alert for areas north of Greater Manchester and Scotland.

Forecasters predict Storm Dudley will move across the northern half of the nation from Wednesday night into Thursday morning - and Storm Eunice will follow.

in Greater Manchester, the Storm Dudley alert is in force from 3pm today - Wednesday - until 6am on Thursday.

Storm Eunice is likely to affect the majority of the UK on Friday, bringing a period of very strong winds that could cause significant disruption.

In a Met Office daily forecast video, meteorologist Alex Deakin has warned people in the affected areas to brace for 'heavy rain and ever-strengthening winds'.

"It's going to be a windy day throughout with those winds continuing to pick up through the afternoon and the evening," he said.

"There will be some snow on the hills across Scotland, but it's the rain and more particularly the wind we're concerned about in this storm system on Wednesday.

"It's likely to cause transport disruption and dangerous conditions by the sea."
