Dancing on Ice Regan Gascoigne opens up about injuries when competing on ITV show

Dancing on Ice favourite Regan Gascoigne appeared on Lorraine this morning to discuss the different pressures that the competitive ITV show has placed on him and skating partner Karina Manta.

Lorraine was full of praise for the exciting duo on the show, and Regan spoke of his longing to be on Dancing on Ice before he got the all-important call.

Speaking on the show this morning, Regan said: "It has been amazing, I just can’t believe I'm doing it! I’ve always watched the show, and to be on it now, is just insane.

“I do feel like I have a little bit of an advantage, because I am so used to performing, and I do pick up routines quickly.

"But, obviously this is very different as I’ll perform a step and I’ll think ‘Ah, that feels right’, but then Karina will say ‘Oh, but the sequence means that it doesn’t actually work like that’, so I’ve had to unlearn a lot of what I already know.

“With spinning, I'm used to spotting, and pulling up and things like that, but it’s a totally different skill.”

Karina also added: "It is a totally different skill, and another thing that previous dancers need to deal with is really high expectations from the judges too.”

Lorraine also mentioned Regan's high level of performance in the first week, and asked how he could keep up that continuous excellence week in, week out.

Regan continued: "Everyone has said how are you gonna keep your levels so high, as every week you want to do better, and so the pressure is definitely high.”

“I’m also my own worst critic, so the slightest stumble frustrates me as I know I can do better!

"I do have little conversations with myself in my head as I'm performing like ‘Okay so this is next, oh why did I make that step there’ and so on."

Karina also added: "Just like everybody else, you’ve just learned how to skate, so you are brand new to this!

"You can’t be too hard on yourself.”

Regan also discussed the unseen injuries that are common on the ice-skating show, adding: "My knees are constantly in knee supports as they swell from falling during practice, I've popped my shoulder out too, but you've just got to get on with it!"

You can watch Dancing On Ice every Sunday on ITV at 6:30pm.
