Dancing on Ice 2022: Stef Reid's life saving amputation to appearing in Vogue

British paralympian Stef Reid will be taking part in Dancing on Ice with her prosthetic right leg on Sunday, January 23.

The 37-year-old has competed for Great Britain in the long jump and the 200m sprint at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games and now she will be facing a new challenge on the ice.

Stef lost her right leg from below the knee when she was just 15 in a boating accident. At the time she was living in Canada and the surgeon saved her life by amputating her leg to stop the bleeding.

She has also featured in the famous fashion magazine Vogue in 2013 when she was in an advert for Debenhams - the first advert from a high street chain to feature disabled models. Vogue ran a section celebrating diversity using Stef as a model.

Stef grew up in Canada and before her injury she was already very sporty, playing rugby union, but she had to give this up after the amputation as referees thought her prosthetic leg could injure the other players.

For a while Stef left sport behind and focused on her academic studies, earning a full scholarship to Queen's University in Canada and studying biochemistry.

It was here she got back into sport joining the track and field team and soon she was competing for Canada at the World Championships.

She competed for Canada at the 2008 Paralympics where she came third in the 200m sprint and in 2010 she swapped to join Team GB and represent the UK as she has a Scottish father and English mother.

At both the 2012 London Paralympic games and the 2016 Rio Paralympic games Stef came second in the long jump.

Stef is married to fellow Paralympian, the Canadian wheelchair racer Brent Lakatos, and they have lived together in England since 2012, training at Loughborough University.

The sporting star also reached the semi-final of the 2018 Celebrity Masterchef and is hoping to wow the judges on the ice.

Dancing on Ice continues on Sunday, January 23, on ITV at 6.30pm.
