Dance Reflections at Sadler’s Wells review: from the classy to the cutting-edge

Working Title by Trisha Brown Dance Co - (Joyce Baranova)

Swank jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels are the big spenders of contemporary dance. Their Dance Reflections festival adorns major capitals — last in London in 2022, it returns with another collection of work roaming from the classy to the cutting-edge.

The opening piece, in Sadler’s Wells’ compact Lilian Baylis Studio, was by French artist Christian Rizzo [Rating: two stars], named for a Turkish proverb: ‘sakınan göze çöp batar, or an over-protected eye always gets sand in it. The 2012 solo on “melancholy and exile” can feel as much a slog as the title — the long 50 minutes begin with Kerem Gelebek perched on an upended box, with beanie and backpack.
