It’s always a hot-button issue anytime there is a change in the offensive coaching staff. Who will call the offensive plays?
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell indicated on Friday that he still has not made up his mind who will be the primary play-caller for the team’s offense in 2022. Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson are still figuring it out.
After praising Johnson and all the work he’s done with QB Jared Goff, Campbell was asked if he made a decision on play-calling.
“No I haven’t,” Campbell said. “I’ll make that decision before Philly,” Campbell said with a smile, alluding to the Week 1 regular season opener against the Eagles.
Campbell finished the 2021 season as the play-caller after dismissing Anthony Lynn as the coordinator midway through the season. Johnson elevated his role into a de facto OC at the time and had considerable input, but Campbell called the plays.
That status could carry over into the new season. Johnson and Campbell have both indicated this offseason that it’s not a big deal who is making the actual play calls, though Johnson is ready to assume the duties if asked.
