Damien Dempsey fights back tears on Tommy Tiernan Show as emotional viewers praise 'important' chat

There were emotional scenes on RTE's Tommy Tiernan Show last night as the host sat down with Damien Dempsey.

The singer-songwriter fought back tears as he remembered late friend and music legend Seamus Begley, who died earlier this month.

Viewers watched as comedian Tommy asked the 47-year-old: "When is the last time you cried?"

Giving an poignant answer, Damien said: "When the mighty Seamus Begley passed. A great friend.

"I stuck on a song that we did a duet on off his mighty album The Bold Kerryman. The two of us singing [then there were] streams of tears.

"I had been remembering him. We went to see the Pecker Dunne in Clare. Pecker was playing the fiddler and sing songs. But he (Seamus Begley) had a great life. He really lived."

He added: "He is still around, you can feel him. He was a great man. I feel blessed to have met him and sang wit him.

"I learned the gra for it [from him]."

Fans took to social media to praise the two men for having an open conversation about their emotions on TV, Dublin Live reports.

One person wrote: "What a beautiful soul you have Damien Dempsey, a gentle giant with a deep love of Ireland."

Another added: "Have never really listened to Damien Dempsey, but just loved that interview and song."

A third said: "Hearing Tommy & Damien talking about listening to music and crying is so refreshing. It's so important to cry & not to be ashamed about talking about it Let it all out."

Someone else posted: "@DamoDempsey is the ideal guest for this kind of show. A real man who is not scared to show his emotions. Ya I like Damo."

Another stated: "Not me crying at Damien Dempsey’s interview when he mentioned Seamus Begley."
