Severe thunderstorm warning cancelled for ACT, Queanbeyan

The severe thunderstorm warning for Canberra and Queanbeyan has been cancelled in the Bureau of Meteorology's latest weather update.

"Severe thunderstorms have now eased," the bureau's alert at 5.20pm said.

Storm activity is said to have eased just after 5pm.

The initial severe weather warning was issued on Friday afternoon alerting residents of damaging winds and large hailstones.

This came after storms were detected near Jugiong and Wee Jasper.

"Severe thunderstorms approach from the north-west," the bureau alert at 4pm said.

Areas depicted to be in immediate threat included Belconnen, Canberra Civic, Queanbeyan, Tuggeranong, Hall, Gungahlin, Canberra Airport, South Canberra, Weston Creek and Woden Valley.

There was also a wider weather warning for people in the South West Slopes, parts of the Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains forecast districts.

However, the warning area moved towards the north about 5.30pm and no longer affected regions near the ACT.
