A federal appeals court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Dallas homeowners who sought more than $58,000 for water damage. The court ruled that their legal action against State Farm was filed after the deadline set by their insurance policy had expired. The dispute began during severe weather in February 2021, when water pipes at a neighbouring property froze and burst. The resulting flood caused extensive damage to the floors and structure of the Dallas home. According to court documents published by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on 22 October 2026, State Farm reviewed the initial claim and paid $4,261 (£3,280) in March 2021. At the time, the insurer told the homeowners they could submit additional receipts for replacement cost benefits as repairs continued. However, the homeowners waited until well after the two-year contractual deadline had passed before seeking another $58,150 in repair costs. This led to a legal dispute over insurance coverage and the deadline for filing a lawsuit.
