Dad drowned after 'fearsome' riptide pulled him out to sea

A 47-year-old dad of one drowned after getting caught in a riptide at a Welsh beach while on holiday with friends and family. RAF Sgt Stephen Anthony Hulsmeier, 47, and his friend's 12-year-old daughter both got caught in the current.

The father-of-one had been enjoying a day at Porth Neigwl beach - known to some as 'Hell's Mouth' - near Pwllheli in Gwynedd, with his wife, Becky, their teenage son, and two other families when tragedy struck on August 6, 2021. An inquest held in Caernarfon heard Sgt Hulsmeier and the 12-year-old daughter of one of his friends had been pulled out to sea by a strong current when the duo began to struggle in the choppy waters.

At the time, RAF Brize Norton shared the photograph above of Sgt Huglsmeier - known as Hulzi to his many friends - and said he was a popular aircraft engineer and during his 23 years’ service he worked on many squadrons and stations, including Coltishall, Coningsby, Leuchars, Cosford and more recently Brize Norton.
