D’Angelo Russell tabbed as potential free agency target for Bulls

As the offseason roars on, the Chicago Bulls need to make some big-time changes. While a rebuild may be what’s best for the team’s future, Arturas Karnisovas seems intent on running back the same core. If that’s the case, the rest of the roster needs serious tweaking.

The trio of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic is solid, but the rest of the team doesn’t provide enough support. Losing Lonzo Ball to a knee injury has seriously hurt the Bulls, and Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report believes Chicago’s biggest need this summer is a new point guard. He listed off a few options in a recent article.

One of the options Swartz mentioned was D’Angelo Russell, who was traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Los Angeles Lakers this past summer but is no longer expected to remain in LA. He’s not the same player as Ball, but he would give them solid minutes.

“Russell isn’t a pure floor general, but he’s another talented ball-handler to mix in with DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine,” Swartz wrote. “The 27-year-old averaged 17.8 points and 6.2 assists and shot 39.6 percent from three between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers this year. If the Lakers choose to chase Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul or another point guard, Russell could be looking for a new home.”

The real question is, how much will Russell cost the Bulls? Chicago doesn’t have a ton of money to work with, so they would have to land Russell on a fairly cheap deal.

That being said, if the two sides can make something work, Russell would be a solid fit for a Bulls team that needs a point guard and lacks three-point shooting.
