The Czech Republic has taken a significant step in strengthening its military capabilities by signing an agreement with the United States to acquire 24 F-35 fighter jets. Valued at around 150 billion Czech koruna ($6.6 billion), this deal marks the largest single purchase for the Czech military.
On Monday, Czech Defense Minister Jana Cernochová and U.S. Ambassador Bijan Sabet signed a memorandum of understanding for the deal. With the signing of a letter of offer and acceptance, the two governments have completed the necessary steps to finalize the contract, as confirmed by the Czech Defense Ministry.
Cernochová expressed her enthusiasm about the agreement, stating, 'By signing this intergovernmental agreement, our country and also our army enter a new era.' This purchase is seen as a crucial move to modernize the Czech military and enhance its defensive capabilities.
The Czech government had given its approval to the deal in September, and the delivery of the first F-35 fighter jet is expected in 2031, with the remaining aircraft to be delivered by 2035. These American-made jets will replace the current fleet of 14 JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets, which are sourced from Sweden.
The financial aspect of the agreement involves the Czech Republic paying nearly $5 billion to the United States. This amount covers the cost of the aircraft, pilot training, ammunition, and other related expenses. The remaining funds will be utilized for upgrading the Caslav air force base located in the central part of Czech Republic, as well as for fuel and staff training.
Lt. Gen. Karel Rehka, Chief of the General Staff, emphasized the significance of this acquisition, stating, 'The F-35 is the only system that can help us succeed in the future's battlegrounds, and that in the case of need, we'll manage to effectively defend ourselves against aggression, together with our allies.' This purchase aligns with the Czech Republic's objective to enhance its military preparedness and maintain strong collaborative relationships with its allies.
The negotiation process for this deal lasted for over a year, occurring during a critical period marked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Czech government's determination to secure these advanced fighter jets demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the security and defense of its nation.
Overall, the acquisition of the F-35 fighter jets signifies a significant milestone for the Czech Republic's armed forces. With these modern fighter aircraft, the Czech military aims to protect its national sovereignty, deter potential threats, and contribute to collective defense efforts with its allies.
