Cyclist injured in suspected hit-and-run following collision with car in Gateshead

A cyclist has been taken to hospital after a suspected hit-and-run in Gateshead.

Emergency crews attended the scene following the collision just before 2pm on Askew Road, Gateshead, near the junction with the Redheugh Bridge. Northumbria Police believe that the driver of the car then left the scene.

A spokesperson for the force said that an investigation into the incident is now under way.

The woman was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle but her injuries are not believed to be serious.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly before 2pm today police received a report a cyclist had been injured while travelling on Askew Road, Gateshead, near the junction with the Redheugh Bridge. It was reported that a female cyclist had been struck by a passing car, which has then left the scene.

"The woman is believed to have sustained non serious injuries but emergency services are in attendance. Officers are also at the scene to establish the circumstances around the incident.

"Askew Road westbound has been closed from the junction with Mulgrave Terrace and local diversions are in place."

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We dispatched one ambulance crew and transported one patient to the RVI for further treatment."
