Cyclist in 60s dies on charity bike ride from London to Brighton as police launch probe

A cyclist has died near Gatwick Airport while taking part in the London to Brighton Bike Ride.

The man, in his 60s, died in Smallfield, Surrey, on Sunday morning.

His next of kin have been informed.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the death of the unnamed victim.

Surrey Police said: "We are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward to help our investigation into the circumstances of this incident."

This charity bike ride is the oldest in Europe with thousands of people take part in the 54-mile route from the capital to the beach and raise vital funds for lifesaving research.

The rider died in the Smallfield area on Sunday, the British Heart Foundation have said.

Road closures were in place.

Charmaine Griffiths, chief executive of the British Heart Foundation, which organises the ride, said: "Our deepest sympathies are with the rider's loved ones."
