A cyclist has died in a fatal collision on a rural road near Warrnambool in south-west Victoria.
Police say a cyclist and a car collided near the intersection of Southern Cross Road and Tower Hill Road at Illowa at 7.15am on Friday.
The cyclist, a 57-year-old Yangery man, died at the scene.
Police are investigating the cause of the incident.
The driver of the car, a 52-year-old from the Warrnambool area, stopped immediately at the scene after the crash.
They have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.
On average, a cyclist dies every nine days on Australian roads.
Monash University senior research fellow Ben Beck told the ABC it was an "imperative" that Australia invested in infrastructure that physically separated cyclists from vehicles.
"We've moved beyond the conversation of bike riding being something nice to have," he said.
"What we need to be able to do is make sure that people can get to their key destination safely."
Mr Beck said for every dollar invested in bike riding, there were returns on average of $5 in economic benefit to Australia.
Police are seeking witnesses to the collision.
