Cyberpunk 2077 x Apex Legends: Event, skins, and a map makeover coming soon

After a few not-so-subtle teasers earlier this week, Apex Legends has revealed that the next major collaboration coming to the game is with CD PROJEKT RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 franchise–with both the game and the recent Netflix animated show represented in equal measure.

The event will last for three weeks, and include a whole new look for E-District, a whole line-up of new skins for Legends and weapons, and a game mode that incorporates the body-altering technology so prevalent in both games and shows.

E-District becomes Night City

E-District, the Apex Legends map that already invokes the aesthetics of Cyberpunk’s Night City, is getting a massive make-over to make that connection even stronger. Changes include, according to the developers, an increase in fog, neon, and advertisements to invoke the atmosphere of Night City.

The skyline has been rebuilt to match both the anime and the game, with individual POIs (points-of-interest) modified for the Cyberpunk style, like Neon Square which now includes eye-catching holograms around buildings like giant koi fish swimming through the air.

Certain motifs and themes will make multiple appearances across E-District, including references to the Moon (as well as a giant moon in the sky) to connect to the themes in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, specifically Lucy’s dream of going to the Moon.

Play as V, Lucy, and David

Like all other collaborations in Apex Legends, the Cyberpunk event will include a huge array of skins and cosmetics. The standout skins are Axle as Lucy and Sparrow as David from Edgerunners, with Lifeline as Female V and Crypto as Male V, complete with his iconic jacket. Other fun mash-ups are Rampart as Rebecca, Gibraltar as Royce, Loba as Panam, and Ash as Lizzy Wizzy.

As for weapons, each character skin will have a matching weapon, with one mythic skin available. This skin, named Skippy, is for the Alternator and stands out as the first mythic skin for a gun in a collab.

Named after the iconic gun in the game, the Apex Legends Skippy gun will include the AI that makes the original so fun along with two tiers–one friendly and one thirsting for blood. Skippy’s gun will include three alternative themes so players can easily align with their preferred Cyberpunk faction.

Cyberpunk’s Limited-Time Wild Card Mode

The Apex Legends x Cyberpunk 2077 event will include a special game mode, like past collabs. This time the focus is on the cyberware denizens use (or misuse) to push their bodies past their natural limits. To reflect that, players will have two options of cyberware to choose from in this event.

The first is the Blackwall Breach, inspired by Lucy’s old net diving, which allows players to enter a void similar to Wraith’s for a very short period. Upon exiting, players will release an EMP blast that cracks nearby shields.

The second cyberware is Sandevistan, inspired by David’s speedster ability, which allows players to dash around the ground (slightly slower in the air) at breakneck speeds. This power gives players a lot of options for movement, which may create baffling combos especially on movement Legends like Octane and Axle.

The draw back of both Blackwall Breach and Sandevistan is cyberpsychosis. After each use of either power, a small portion of a bar will fill up, indicating that the player is close to entering cyberpsychosis. The only way to keep that meter down is to collect amino blockers across the map or in loot bins. If that meter reaches its limits, players will enter cyberpsychosis, which takes away overshields and weapons (leaving players to fight with only their fists) while also causing blurred vision, faster movement–with a bonus of wall running–and a red tint to vision.

If none of this sounds too bad, that’s because the developers wanted to balance the pros and cons of pushing past your limits with cyberware in Cyberpunk. In a final, desperate battle, entering cyberpsychosis might be a way to beat your enemies down with both speed and fists, but it also runs the risk of being gunned down in the blink of an eye.

The Cyberpunk event will last for three weeks, after which the skins and special version of E-District may never be available again.
