Cyberpunk 2077 is free to play on Xbox and PlayStation 5 this weekend

CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077 will be free to play on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S — just in time for the Easter bank holiday weekend.

The free trial will be available from Thursday, March 28 at 3pm UK time until Monday, April 1 at 7.59am.

"Try out #Cyberpunk2077 for free!" Cyberpunk 2077's post on X, formerly Twitter, reads.

"Get a taste of Night City in a free trial coming soon to @PlayStation 5 and @Xbox Series X|S. Deets below."

Released in 2020, the action role-playing video game is set in the fictional metropolis of Night City, California. It is played from a first-person perspective as V, a mercenary whose voice, face, hairstyle, body type and modifications, background, and clothing are completely customisable.

The game involves conflict from rampant gang wars and its ruling entities contending for dominance.

Work on Cyberpunk 2077 began following the release of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition (2012).

"Meet a host of memorable characters, from rockerboy rebel Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) to a variety of fixers, friends, and enemies — all of whom have their own agenda. Who you choose to help and how won’t always be easy, and it’ll have far-reaching consequences for your own survival," the website reads.

The best thing is that no subscription is required to access the free trial, meaning you won't need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass. However, you will be limited to five hours' game time. There's no word of a similar offer on the PC.

Last autumn, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty was released, the game's only expansion. It stars Idris Elba as the character Solomon Reed and has since sold more than four million copies. Unfortunately, though, it's not part of the upcoming free trial. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has received widespread acclaim.
