We're a nation of curry lovers, but the cost of living crisis is threatening our beloved Indian takeaways and restaurants. Rising costs will close down a curry house every day, one expert predicts.
As reported by the Mirror, one in four curry houses has gone under since 2007. The remaining 9,000 are reportedly struggling to keep their doors open. Yadav Bhandari, owner of the Everest Inn, in Blackheath, South East London, said: “The price of everything is going up. The cost of creating dishes has skyrocketed.”
Jeffrey Ali, whose family founded the British Curry Awards, said 3,000 restaurants have closed since 2007 – a quarter of all curry restaurants and takeaways. And the 9,000 remaining, which contribute £3.6billion to the economy, are under threat. “The industry desperately needs support”, he said, adding: "At the current rate of inflation, we could soon see at least one restaurant a day close down.”
